Description Byzantine empire found itself in a deep crisis after the battle of Mantzikert in 1071. In a decade it lost substantial territories in Asia Minor, and it also the territories in the Balkans started to show centrifugal tendencies, corroborated by the presence of dangerous external foes. Alexios Komnenos was able to stop this critical development, and renewed the Byzantine control of the Balkans after fighting off the Normans, the Pechenegs and the Cumans.
