Description Aim: The study strives to establish whether dental esthetics and face expression show any impact on adolescents´ appraisal of their peers in terms of social attractiveness, athletic abilities, popularity, leadership abilities and academic abilities. Material and method: Students aged between 10 and 16 assessed photographs-portraits of their peers divided into three variants (A,B.C) – photographs with ideal smile, nonideal smile, and a neutral expression. Each student answered five questions for each photograph regarding social attractiveness, athletic abilities, popularity, leadership abilities and academic abilities. Results: Photographs with ideal smile were assessed significantly better than photos with neutral expression and nonideal smile (p<0.0001). Girls assessed subjects’ social attractiveness significantly higher than boys (p<0.0001). Photographs of women were assessed significantly higher than photos of men (p<0.0001) in all the areas except athletic abilities. The higher age is related to higher rating of social attractiveness (p=0.002) and popularity (p<0.0001). Conclusion: Photographs of subjects with ideal smile were assessed significantly better than those with neutral expression or nonideal smile (p<0.0001 for all questions). The study proved the fact that attractive persons are generally considered as more successful, and that orthodontic treatment brings psychological and social benefits.
