Description The article examines the problem of spatial segregation of the urban poor and also deals with the segregation measurement. It discusses the general context of segregation, its causes, positive and negative effects, the conditions leading to its rise and certain specific features. The article then introduces several contemporary illustrations of segregation in several European cities (in Hungary, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and France). The last part of the article concentrates on the measurement of segregation. Of the twenty existing segregation measures the two most frequently used are described: the dissimilarity index (D) and the exposure index (P). Their calculation, mutual differences and interpretation are shown, together with a brief comment on some related methodological problems concerning segregation measurement.
