| Description | North Macedonia, also Republic of Macedonia or the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in the past, is a shining example of a multi-ethnic country in the Balkans, where the issues of ethnic and national identity are highly relevant at present. The paper submits a historical context of contemporary processes with emphasis on the political aspects at internal and international levels (conflict between the majority Macedonians and minority Albanians, disputes over the name of the country with Greece, disputes over the language and ethnic independence with neighbouring Bulgaria, dissension with the Serbian Orthodox Church) and the development of Macedonian national identity. |
