Description | Relying on multi-sited data, this chapter explores some of the socio-political characteristics and paradoxes of hitchhiking. It does so through autoethnography and the comparative analysis of historical and literary narratives. The practice of hitchhiking evokes anthropological, historiographical and imaginative meanings, representing in Europe a particular form of mobility in which journeys are freely constructed. Hitchhikers are marginal in the sense that they appropriate different dimensions of motoring networks, without endorsing the ideology of mass transport. By its temporal character, hitchhiking becomes a liminal, anti-structural and peri-urban act. Indeed, this type of displacement has revealing characteristics about non-places, border fluidity and statelessness -- whilst being a complex, multimodal form of 'corporal/carporal' displacement. |
