Description The topic of the prevalence of parenthood in persons with severe mental illness (SMI) has received minimal attention in the Czech Republic and no studies or statistics have been published to document this phenomenon. International research shows that 20-38.5 % of patients with SMI are raising a minor child. Our ongoing research aims to map the prevalence of parenthood in hospitalized SMI patients. The results presented are based on data collected in a psychiatric inpatient hospital. By analyzing the medical records of patients hospitalized for 158 SMI between 2017-2020, it was found that 40.1 % of patients are parents. The research may help to raise awareness of this issue and provide the impetus for the development of appropriate interventions and programs for families of SMI patients.
