| Description | Although the IFF in Karlovy Vary had interest to welcome the best films from socialist cinemas in its competition, this did not always happen. In accordance with the official cultural policy of the time, the festival distanced itself from the movement called the Polish Film School, for example. Hungarian films, on the other hand, enjoyed recognition here in the mid-1950s. Comrades from the GDR withdrew their competition film from the program (1966), after the 11th plenary session of the SED Central Committee. Films from the allied socialist countries got often various awards in Karlovy Vary. Ironically, however, it was easier for filmmakers from Poland and Hungary to win the Grand Prize at other festivals (Cannes, Venice, West Berlin, Moscow) than in Karlovy Vary. |
