| Description | One of the fundamental subjects of aesthetics is the value of art. It is either necessary or accidental. Shall we admit that the highest artistic achievements are such by chance? Two explications of intrinsic value are presented and examined. The role of representational properties is key. Finally, the notion of intrinsic value is tested on a selected work of art. If the notion of intrinsic value is found to bear on the explanation of art, then the canon is in part a canon of works of necessary value. |
