Description The provision of meals comprises a fundamental part of the services offered by care homes. The transition of older adults to institutional care facilities is accompanied by changes in the eating habits of their clients, including a reduction in autonomy concerning the choice of meals and diet, as well as changes to eating patterns. Moreover, the older adult population is known to be susceptible to malnutrition. The factors that are associated with the transition to institutional care, including the loss of autonomy and dissatisfaction with the food served, may even contribute to the development of this disease. This paper aims to form an understanding of the limits and options surrounding autonomy in terms of the eating habits of older adults in institutional care. We examine whether and how the autonomy and individual opinions and needs of clients are supported in the composition of the diet and the overall dietary regime. The analysis was based on the study of publicly-accessible documents that are published by care facilities on their websites. Despite many care homes claiming to provide personalised services for their clients and the promotion of independence, our research did not confirm these trends in terms of the provision of meals.
