Description This chapter studies video abstracts in the field of mathematics to show how the new opportunities offered by the multimodal digital environment help researchers personalise their papers and extend the reach of scientific research. The study is based on a small corpus of 16 video abstracts published online in the Journal of Number Theory (Elsevier). Adopting a genre analysis (Swales 1990) and multimodal analysis (Kress 2013) perspective and drawing on previous research on video abstracts (e.g. Spicer 2014, Liu 2020, 2021, Cocceta 2021), this study proposes a typology of video abstracts according to the interplay between the oral and visual components involved and identifies the core and optional rhetorical moves of the genre. The rhetorical moves of video abstracts are compared to those of printed abstracts. The analysis also considers the role of personality and direct address to the listener and their impact on the interaction between the researcher(s) and the audience and the promotion of the author and the article content.
