| Description | Bohumil Markalous (1882-1952) is known today mainly for his literary work, which he published under his pen name Jaromír John. However, he was also active for a long time in several other areas - in the field of pedagogy, aesthetics, journalism and art criticism. And it was his non-literary (albeit often literature-related) activities that repeatedly led him to the issue of pictures stories, which at that time were only slowly emerging from the position of a rather overlooked subset of cartoons. Markalous commented on picture stories/comics and their creators several times in his journalistic work and also selected comics for publication as editor-in-chief of the weekly Pestrý týden. |
