Description Fifty years ago, in 1949, Nelson and Mayer described Treponema pallidum immobilization test (TPIT) called also Nelson-Mayer test. TPIT is a highly specific serological reaction, the results of which were decisive in controversial cases of syphilis diagnostics for many years. The disadvantage of TPIT is the toxic effect of many sera tested on live treponemata, technical complicatedness and the necessity to use experimental animals. New serological methods (ELISA and Western blot) displaces the TPIT in the routine diagnostics and the importance of TPIT is now rather investigational.
