Description Members of the genus Staphylococcus are gram-positive, facultative anaerobic cocci occurring predominantly singly and in clusters. Cells are nonmotile, nonsporing and catalase positive. Staphylococci are primarily associated with the skin and mucous membranes of mammals and birds and they often represent here the prevailing microorganisms. Their taxonomy underwent essential changes in recent years so that, at present,44 species and subspecies altogether are described approvedly in the genus Staphylococcus of which approximately one half are either opportunistically or primarily pathogenic microbes. Staphylococci can be devided according to coagulase and host range into four groups which are presented.
