| Description | In The Empire Writes Back, the now classic study of post-colonial literatures, Bill Ashcroft defines the appropriation as a useful strategy to undermine the dominant position of Standard English over other forms of English. Though Ashcroft speaks primarily about the language appropriation, the concept can be applied to other fields as well. The paper focuses on the appropriation of Christianity in Louise Erdrich's novels (esp. in Love Medicine), the consequent clash between Christianity and the Chippewa religion, and on the effects this strategy had both on Christian and Chippewa religions. |
