Description The exfoliative toxin A (ETA) is coded by the eta gene of prophage which is integrated in S. aureus genome. Three bacteriophages were isolated from clinical strains of S. aureus. ETA-negative strain 1039 was lysogenized by these eta-positive phages, and was converted into a producer of ETA. Evidence has been given that the horizontal transport of eta gene was mediated by ETA-converting phages of serological group B belonging to family Siphoviridae.
