Citation
Description Based on an analysis of papal documents as well as the Vita Methodii, the work examines shifts in Methodius' status and the relevant causes. The significance of Bishop Methodius' titulature is analyzed by means of a comparison with instances of other eighth- and ninth-century missionaries. The text also analyzes the legitimization of the new diocese through legal and historical fictions dealing with the restoration of the long-lost diocese and its apostolic origin and also attempts to draw a comparison with the importance of apostolic tradition in Rome, Constantinople, Metz, Compostela and Venice.
