Description A new species of the genus Asterocapsa CHU, A. salina is described, based on morphological and ecological criteria. The samples thereof were collected from a sand pool bank on the dry salt lake Chott-el-Djerib in the Sahara desert, Tunisia. The species differs from all other so far established ones by growing in solitary cells not forming colonies, enclosed by an yellowish-brown, irregularly ragged sheath and by its adaptation to a hypersaline habitat.
