tl;dr: The project aims to analyse life writing’s narrative strategies and their relation to the nexus of narrative, memory, identity, and culture; to enrich both autobiography studies and narrative theory; and to introduce contemporary autobiography research to Czech academia.

The project aspires to examine narrative strategies in life writing, combining narratological methods with autobiography studies while also drawing on cognitive and narrative psychology. It will analyse examples of life narratives (autobiography and memoir, meta-autobiography, autofiction, and autobiographical comics) written in English, German, and Czech since the 1970s to observe how the employed narrative techniques reflect, portray, or enact self-construction and self-discovery, problems of autobiographical memory, and the conventions of autobiographical writing. It will investigate the aesthetic effects of different narrative methods and their possible ethical ramifications. The main outcome will be a scholarly monograph focusing on 1) narrative point of view as a means of staging the complex relationship between the present and past selves, 2) fictionality employed to communicate the autobiographical truth, 3) autobiographers’ engagement with cultural patterns of experience and identity, and 4) meta-autobiographical strategies in various types of life writing.
