The proposed project looks at the boundaries of solidarity in the Czech civil sphere in relation to
Ukrainian immigrants. It explores how solidarity in relation to Ukrainian immigrants is
experienced (or not), and how its boundaries are variously maintained, enlarged, blurred, or
crossed in the Czech city of Brno. The research employs qualitative research methods: (1)
critical focus groups with native-born Czechs, long-settled Ukrainians, and Ukrainian forced
migrants who arrived after February 2022, (2) in-depth expert interviews with local politicians,
municipal workers, and NGO representatives working with Ukrainian immigrants, and (3) an
interpretive content analysis of media news concerning Ukrainian migration. The project
conceptualizes and implements a new scientific idea, namely, the boundaries of solidarity,
informs policy making to better formulate initiatives directed at integration and incorporation of
Ukrainians in Czech society, and strengthens the efforts of NGOs and others seeking to assist
Ukrainians in settlement, labor market participation and cultural adaptation.
