Despite the widespread use of polymethine cyanine dyes and the recent intensive research in this field, strategies for the synthesis/modification of chain-substituted cyanines remain underdeveloped. In this project, we propose new strategies for the preparation of hitherto unavailable and unexplored, but still fundamental, cyanine derivatives. The main goal of this project is therefore to synthesize new cyanine derivatives with improved optical, photophysical and chemical properties, which could be of interest in various fields of science and applications in the future, such as phototherapy, high-resolution imaging or tissue visualization. Our laboratory experiments and mechanistic studies will provide a comprehensive picture of the physicochemical properties of the prepared cyanine derivatives.
