Projekt integruje fyzicko-geografické, sociálně-geografické a kartografické výzkumné aktivity v rámci komplexního výzkumného rámce. Současně tak propojuje dílčí cíle bádání jednotlivých výzkumných skupin působících na Geografickém ústavu. Orientace na integrovaný výzkum přírodních a společenských procesů dále rozvíjí cíle řešené v předcházejících projektech specifického výzkumu.
