Description This article deals with a recent trend in the case law of the ECtHR on the right to free elections. More specifically, it focuses on the growing intensity of the Strasbourg review applied to the so-called "institutional design issues" of national election laws. It deals with, among other things, issues such as electoral thresholds, duty to vote, electoral deposits, bans on political advertisement before elections and financing political parties.
