Description The contribution deals with the 17th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva and the evaluation of its results. Firstly, the function of this institution is explained. Afterwards the course of the session is evaluated, in particular reports of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Special Rapporteurs, the present situation in Libya, Côte d'Ivoire and Syria, and also the conclusions of the Universal periodic review of human rights situation in several states. In conclusion, the author expresses his view that althaugh in short term the operation of the council seems to be ineffective, in long term it can contribute to the improvement of the overall human rights situation.
