Description The book reconstructs and documents the history of the International Association of Teachers of German (IDV), in order to underline the importance of the Association for the development of German as a foreign language and the role of the Association in spreading the language policy of the German-speaking countries. In the first 20 years the IDV had to find his position between the conflicting interests of the different language policy of the two german countrie. At the same time the IDV also gave a decisive impulse for the professional development of the discipline in Austria and Switzerland. The Association also influenced substantive concepts of the discipline through its international conferences and training events. With the topics of international understanding, cultural studies the IDV influenced the orientation of German as a foreign language. Since 1989, issues of international cooperation, regionalization and integration of non-European countries as well as the principle of „DACH“ and German as a plurizentric language are the defining concerns that the association is trying to disseminate actively. The analysis of political interests and the framework for action in which the IDV acted underscores the political dimension of speaking German as a foreign language.
