Citation
Description The paper targets a role of secularization theories in empirical research of secularization as a process of declining social significance of (institutionalized) religion in modern (Western) societies. The most important theoretical contributions in the field of sociological study of secularization will be introduced briefly. Then, attention will be paid to several selected examples of empirical research of the topic in comparative surveys. The ways of application of secularization theories, of operationalization of key concepts (religion, modernity) and selection of empirical indicators in the research will be emphasized. Finally, a short critical reflection on scientific potential of quantitative methods in the sociological study of secularization will be offered.
