Description | Wood has played a significant technical role within art since the ancient times, because it has served as an extraordinarily suitable painting surface for painting of all types. The advantage of wood was its accessibility and relative durability whereas its low weight was convenient when used for portable works of painting. The beauty of wood, expressed mainly through its surface grain and texture, natural colouring and its unique hue, was partly shadowed by the art of painting. The wood confered its natural properties to art. The parallel paper suggests some aspects of wood utilization in the art history, especially from the middle Ages up to the 19th century. The study uses some examples to show that a painter's work can be extremely interesting because of its wooden painting surface itself, although hidden to a current visitor of a museum or a gallery. |
