Description The concept of instructional quality is often used as a slogan in various political declarations, but the professional community suffers from its vagueness as an academic construct. The aim of this study is to help to establish the concept of instructional quality in domestic scholarly discourse. The author seeks to present and clarify the concept of instructional quality on a broad interdisciplinary basis. In a historical excurses he shows how different methodological approaches (normative, analytical, empirical) have been used in the definition of the concept of quality of education/instruction in different academic fields (sociology, psychology, education, didactics) and research domains (research into teaching and learning, research on the school and classroom climate, research into school quality). At the end the author outlines the prospects for further theoretical and empirical work on the subejct (developing models of quality, analysing quality features etc.).
