Description During the 1990s, civil-military relations in the Czech Republic gradually approached a state typical of many consolidated democracies. The idea of the soldier-citizen established itself firmly in the mind of the Czech society in the course of the transformation that started in 1989 and has remained there ever since, notwithstanding the later introduction of voluntary recruitment. Nevertheless, the lack of understanding of military values and traditions among young soldiers, the general weak civic identity of Czech soldiers across the age groups, and problems with right-wing extremism in military institutions might indicate weaknesses in the education and training program.
