Description The paper focuses on issues of international cooperation in criminal matters aimed at safeguarding the rights of the accused to a fair trial, i.e. – among others – the right to counsel, the right to information and the right to interpretation and translation. It is essential that special protection of certain groups of defendants, especially juveniles, is provided for, because there are differences between the age limits of criminal liability in various EU countries that can lead to discrepancies in the ways the rights of juveniles are applied. Special attention is paid to the differences in securing the right to counsel and the possibility of waiving the right in case of juveniles. The paper concludes with a brief summary of the changes in international cooperation arising after the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty.
