Description The development of Web 2.0 offers a new potential for the teaching of media education. The increase in the importance of social networks for communication and changes of on-line journalism are connected with the rise of participation culture and the position of civic journalism in the information society. Convergence culture leading to civic activism should be linked to the problem of ethical representation as one of the central issues of contemporary media education. The necessity to cultivate media literacy thus appears to be most urgent so far in the history, given the influence of the turbulent changes in technology. This is further elaborated on in the present paper. The author also provides examples to exemplify the problem and considers what challenges result from such a development for the cultivation of media literacy.
