Description Although the concepts are polyfarmacotherapy and polypharmacy are substantively similar and sometimes even professional public confused, you can not declare etymologically identical. Polypharmacotherapy often justified and is useful in old age depends primarily polymorbidity simultaneously present. Although the individual diseases are quite rightly indicated and treated according to EBM (evidence based medicine), of which more than once threatened possible pharmacological interactions recede somewhat into the background. So they can be severe and difficult to detect. Number of medications in ambulatory elderly is 4-6/denně; while hospitalized is 5-8/den. In current practice as polypharmacotherapy called concomitant use more than 4 or more medications. For these drug regimens are at increased risk of drug interactions. Polypharmacy is defined as a condition where the patient - in some cases unnecessarily - medicines used too much, too long or in excessive doses. About polypharmacy is spoken even if the patient is taking even one not strictly necessary medicine. To some extent, this term tends to indicate unsuitability incoordination and therapeutic procedures and measures. Polypharmacy may lead to an exponential increase in the risk of adverse effects and drug interactions (with 6 or more drugs, the risk of WHO particularly high).
