| Description | Selective serotonin reptake inhibitors are frequently prescribed to pregnant women with severe depression. Severe mental illness such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are usually continuously treated with antipsychotics and mood stabilizers. Exposing the foetus to psychopharmaceuticals can lead to cengenital malformations, perinatal complications and they also affect neurobehavioral development. Most of antidepressants and antipsychotics have a relative non-significant risk of congenital malformations, however mood stabilizers are teratogenic. Perinatal toxicity is usually short-term and transitory without any consequences for the newborn. |
