Description Hedges are an indispensable part of academic writing. It has been proven that there are differences between different fields in the way authors employ hedges in their writing. This paper presents the results of a contrastive study comparing hedges in linguistics and literary criticism research articles. The functional and formal analyses were based on a revised classification of hedges by Hyland (1998) and Salager-Meyer (2000) and the rhetorical structure (Swales 1990) of the texts was examined in order to discover how scientists as writers of research articles communicate with their intended readership using hedges as one of the language resources.
