Description This paper deals with the use of 3D technologies in the field of cartographic visualization. The main emphasis is placed on solutions which are used for the display of 3D spatial data directly in a web browser. A considerable progress in studying 3D internet visualization techniques been made in recent years. Some individual implementations mostly based on WebGL and JavaScript have been made, but none of them offer universal solution. In this paper the basic typology and examples of existing web technologies are described. These technologies were tested in various web browsers and the results are compared with the current statistics on the use of web browsers by users. Other technological parameters, such as open source code and the extendibility or application of geographical coordinate systems, are discussed too. In conclusion, the most suitable technology for 3D cartographic visualization is proposed in web environment for a maximum number of potential users.
