Description One of the most difficult problem of celestial mechanics was interpretation irregularities of motion of these two planets. Kepler observed a decreasing mean motion for Saturn and an increasing one for Jupiter. The first Newton s treatment of this phenomenon was fundamentally qualitative. Euler derived from the inverse-square law of gravitation the differential equations for perturbations. Subsequently he introduced analytical method known as the variation of orbital elements.
