Description | Chronic non-malignant pain is one of the most common problems of the senior population. Effectiveness of the treatment of chronic pain in oldage is influenced by multifactorial. Pain may be underreported as some elderly patients incorrectly believe that pain is a normal process of aging and so it can not be adequately treated. On the other hand, we should mention the persisting lack of knowledge and skills of health professionals not only in the identifi cation of pain, but then also in the management of pain in seniors. The aim of the survey was to map the subjective view of seniors on the effectiveness of pain treatment in outpatient setting for pain management in Thomayer Hospital in Prague. Methods: To test the effectiveness of pain we conducted a questionnaire survey of selected group of seniors treated in outpatient setting for pain management. Statistical data processing was done using inductive statistics (chi-square test) at a signifi cance level alfa = 0.05. Results: We verifi ed statistical relationship between gender and declared subjective feelings of diffi culty in relation to pain (p < 0.00). Men more often reported insuffi cient sleep duration and the inability to pursue hobbies. Women more frequently suffer tiredness, anxiety, helplessness, fear of pain and inability to perform normal daily activities. Younger and older seniors in our group are statistically signifi cantly different in the declared problems (p < 0.00). Younger seniors reported more fatigue and lack of sleep duration. Older seniors often declared problems with performance of daily activities. Between gender and age of respondents and the declared degree of pain leading to find doctor dependence was found (p -/< 0.50). Both men and women reported that outside of regular check in an ambulance should seek medical advice only when they have very annoying and distressing pain. Most respondents seniors also stated that they disagrees with the claim that pain is a normal part of aging, regardless of age and gender, and also stated that they were satisfied with the pain relief. They declared alleviate problems with self-care on the basis of pain depends on the age of respondents, but still less difficulty with self-care feelings 96.43% seniors. |
