Description This chapter from a specialist book „Gestalt therapy in clinical practice“ presents a scientific view on the topic of combination of psychotherapeutic and psychiatric medication treatment seen from the Gestalt psychotherapy perspective. Current research based findings and specialist literature on the topic of combination of psychotherapy and medication are elaborated, then a new and original scientific piece of knowledge is presented. The text gives an overview of different effects of psychiatric medications and focuses on their influence on the psychotherapeutic process and outcome in a clinical practice with severely disturbed patients. Clinical experiences on the given topic are elaborated. The role of psychiatric medication in the process of psychotherapy and from a broader relational and social context is analysed and theoreticaly substantiated. Guidelines for psychotherapy work in clinical practice are deduced from described theoretical concepts and ilustrated by case study examples.
