| Description | In this article, I generally focus on ways and possibilities in studying the interpretation of texts of art and popular culture. Drawing on basic postulates of social constructivism and postmodernism, I see as fruitful to conceptualize art and popular culture as two closely related discourses, interwoven by multiple and diverse links. In other words, I claim that both are similar in their inner structure, meaning each of them encompasses different levels of quality. Therefore, it gets interesting to trace also the differences in the “outer” structures various texts enter, in their social use. Applying these claims on concrete research project, I concern on discursive models in Czech publishing field, or, on processes of construction, legitimization and redefinition of literature in here. In this article, I introduce theoretical and methodological basis of the project. Firstly, I give a short overview of Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of art and of Norman Fairclough’s framework for critical discourse analysis, including the role of discourse in late modernity. Secondly, I adjust these for Czech publishing field and supplement them with some recent research findings on book industry. Thirdly, I get back to Bourdieu’s notion of popular culture and art as two opposite poles in field of art and review it in light of actual trends in literary field. |
