Description The number of households in the Czech Republic that find themselves in "material need" and are recipients of various material need benefits is growing every year. Besides other factors, the limited range of social work on offer to people in material need under the system of social aid in material need is evidently one cause of this development. Based on analysis of data from three qualitative case studies by material need officers at contact points of the Labour Office in the Czech Republic and the social departments of municipal authorities in the same administrative district, we have tried to answer the question, whether it can be expected that, as part of the social aid provided by material need officers, the person/family in material need will be provided not only with the appropriate benefit but also with additional assistance towards addressing his/its difficult situation involving social work, and if so, what form this social aid takes. First we analyse the concept of social aid the scrutinised workpla ces work with - we identified "Extended" and "Reduced" concepts - and then we discuss the conditions under which these concepts are implemented and weigh up their benefits and risks.
