Description The presented paper discusses existing results and perspectives of surface surveys which were taking place on „Smilův kopec” by Kojatice (Třebíč district). The „Smil ů v kopec” is a signi ? cant landmark which is situated north of Kojatice and Velký Újezd villages (Třebíč district) in varying altitude of 500 to 506 m above sea level (GPS: 49° 0’34.77”N; 15°42’9.51”E; WGS_84). It is a largely forested knoll (area) ending with two spitting promontories with steep slopes on south-western and north-western part of the hill. On the south-eastern side, the knoll changes into deforested plain terrace and then continues with the gentle slope of „Smilová” site. The prospection took place both in forested and deforested part of the site. From methodological point of view the non-destructive ? eld survey was applied for relief-mapping, settlement suitability and depiction of potential preserved relicts of anthropogenic activities. In deforested part of „Smil ů v kopec”, in the „Smilová” site, the surface line survey has been repeated several times. The distance between two lines was 2 meters and the area set up in advance was scanning in both north-southern and east-western direction. All ? ndings were recorded with GPS GARMIN Vista HCx device. Subsequent processing of collected data and visualization of spatial distribution of artifacts was made with MapSource, BaseCamp and Google Earth software. Also the remote sensing of Earth via available map servers providing ortho-photos and old maps was used. One further aim was to verify an existing model, according to which the highland hill fort with settlement from Neolithic to Slavic period could be situated here. Present prospection of „Smil ů v kopec” and its background brought some insights of several new structures. The featureless settlement of Late Paleolithic, young phase of Lengyel Culture and High Middle Ages (defunct medieval village from 12 th ? to 15 th century) was documented here. For now, all ? ndings were determined just in „Smilová” site. During the ? eld survey, no relicts of mentioned forti ? cation were found, thus the myth about the presence of some hill fort in this area has been refuted. In future this site proposes a lot of perspective for further research. Primarily the non-destructive or less-destructive methods of archaeological survey could be applied. It may provide further knowledge about development of prehistoric and medieval settlement of this part of south-western Moravia.
