Description The generalisation of the access to the higher educations the leads to the increased drop-out rates. Our analysis is based in the quantitative research of students, who left one of the study programmes at the anonymous Czech university before getting a degree. The paper describes the basic parametres of the population of drop out students and provides an insight into the subjective reasons for leaving, into the subjective study coping abilities and investigates other important factors of drop-out. We are stressing the fact that the population of leaving student is not homogenous and that the concept of the study failure could explain only one third of drop-outs. On the other hand, a big proportion of drop-outs can be explained as a result of the postponed choice of study programme or as the conflict between various spheres of life.
