Description | The traditional concept of a subculture as a group of people which differ significantly from other people and share a common problem, interest or procedure may not always be fully sufficient for the study of contemporary youth subcultures´ partial identities. Newer directions of subcultural studies come up with the concept of postmodern subculture in which its members are without a common class position and these groups have also highly developed individualism and are highly fragmented. This paper aims to reflect whether this shift in the researched subject from a closed group to fluidized grouping of individuals could be reflected in the applicability of traditional ethnographic methods. With practical examples from a subcultural ethnographical research I outline the issues of creation and preservation of subcultural capital in the space between personal encounters and virtual environments and the applicability of combined methods of ethnography in its classical form and new methods of ethnography of virtual environment in the study of comtemporary subcultures. |
