Description The publication Zpravodajské žánry v tištěných a online médiích addresses the topic of quality journalism and news coverage, an area of journalism which is most bound by all kinds of various rules. The text accompanied by images and samples of discussed genres or visual elements presents a maximalist version of journalist reporting rules (while the author is fully aware that rules vary across different editorial offices). These arise from the present practice in selected Czech and Slovak quality printed press (in the MF Dnes daily, regional Deníky, the SME daily and both Czech and Slovak versions of Hospodářské noviny) and their respective news servers as well as from specialized journalist literature and also from many years of journalist experience of the author in several editorial offices. The publication highlights the opinions of some professional journalists who disagree with the idea that in the present day, we are witnessing the twilight of journalism since reading is in decline and so is the amount of sold copies and consequently the economic performance of the media, too. In their opinion, the current times are the golden era – journalism has now the largest potential in history to tell a story. The story can be passed to readers in the form of motion pictures, spoken word, written text as well as photographs. In connection with this, the text addresses multi- media and its use in online media as well as its overlap into printed media due to extended reality (from QR codes to real displays glued onto magazine pages and connected to the Internet via a SIM card). In agreement with others, the author concludes that today’s news coverage mainly constitutes of soft news and is ruled by stories and emotions which can make journalism able to compete, since these have the potential to attract readers’ attention.
