Description The study deals with the landscape and with human agricultural activities in it, considering them from the perspective of the concept of sustainable development. It examines various possible meanings of the term “sustainable agriculture,” focusing especially on the example of the emergence and development of contemporary industrial agriculture in developed countries. Modern industrial agriculture is seen as an activity that has been proven to be environmentally as well as socially unsustainable. Special attention is devoted to organic agriculture, not only as a set of environmentally-friendly technologies, but mainly as a system that provides also extra-production agricultural services, including the cooperation and communication among diverse social groups. Thus agriculture is understood to be part of all human activities in the landscape and the region.
