Description | The seminar aims to address the discursive construction of Europe’s citizens and nations, with a particular focus on the countries that recently joined the EU. We wish to explore, among others, the discursive strategies in which the opposing groups of “us” v. “them” – (e.g. old/new, 17/27, North/South) – are formulated, with their underlying ideologies and resulting projected identities. We welcome case studies as well as comparative (e.g. cross-cultural or diachronic) analyses based on material from diverse sources (e.g. media, political speeches, policy papers) that preferably approach the issue from the perspective of (critical) discourse analysis and pragmatics. |
