Description | The study summarizes the evaluation of a random find of a knife-like hunting sword that was discovered in 1961 during pipeline digging at the edge of Blücher Palace on the corner of Masarykova and Hrnčířská Streets in the centre of Opava. The dussack sword fitted with knuckle guard stud, whose pommel has a form of a shell, belongs to quite a prolific type of weapon from the 15th to the beginning of the 16th century. Quite uniquely a torso of a leather scabbard without inner construction, whose throat was fitted with simply ornamented ironwork made of lead plate, preserved on the examined weapon. The surface of the leather scabbard was decorated with a combination of pushed and carved décor in the form of geometric shapes. Thanks to the decorations it can be compared to a large number of preserved scabbards of contemporary knives and daggers, to whose construction it is also comparable. It was made of a single strap of leather whose edges were evidently sewn together on the underside of the scabbard. |
