Description | Obviously every depressed person experiences her depression in an individually specific way and every therapeutic situation develops in a different way, depending on the actual flow of contacting between the client and the therapist. However, the depressive way of functioning has its own specific features. The relationship of psychotherapist and depressed client suffers in a specific way that is different from a relational dynamic that appears in contact with clients whose suffering is of another kind. What I would like to show here is the phenomenological observation and theoretical conceptualisation of such therapists’ feelings and coping impulses that appear in the therapy situation with a depressed client. These experiences can be explored without blaming anyone and can be used for the field diagnosis as a description of a depression specific pattern by which the relational field is organized here and now in the clinical situation. I will offer a theoretical model that I hope can be used by therapists to find orientation in their experiences and inspiration for coping with them when in contact with a depressed client. This model is a result of a a qualitative research, where I explored therapists’ in-session experiences with depressive clients (Roubal & Rihacek, 2014). Data for the research were gathered in individual and focus group interviews with 30 therapists and the grounded theory method was used as a methodological framework. |
