Description The chapter by Vladan Hodulák, strives to analyze the North-South discourse and the two regions’ mutual influence in the field of international political economy. First, the author begins with an introduction to the theories concerned with global political economy that were developed since the 16 th century in the North. Among these theories classical and neoclassical economics were considered to have the most profound influence. Their main rivals in the North have been connected mostly to the tradition stemming from the writings of Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes. Second, the chapter briefly assesses the effects of these theories and the concrete measures they helped to shape in the Global South. Third, Hodulák explores the alternatives that were formed in the South as a response to the mainstream northern perspective. The most important among them were structuralism and dependency theory. Postcolonialism entered this discourse rather recently, and its contribution has been limited mostly to rethinking and criticizing the Marxist perspective. Hodulák concludes that for postcolonialism to be taken more seriously in this area, its adherents should focus more on the debate with the economic mainstream and introduce their own practical solutions to challenges provided by global economic development that could be followed by ordinary people on a day-to-day basis.
