Description The study focuses on the behaviour of corporate concerns during World War II. Using the example of Baťa’s expansion into the South-Bohemian town of Sezimovo Ústí, it describes the basic aspects of the construction of the factory town and its settlement. The “scientific” organization of production introduced in Baťa’s operation was not limited by the walls of the enterprise. Its principles also influenced the arrangement of the town area and its inhabitants. They also defined the main control mechanism in the new MAS company and the relationship of its management to the top management in the headquarters in Zlín. A transformation, subject to external conditions, of some methods of the staff recruitment of the new company took place in connection with the war economy and introduction of forced labour. Where qualification, age, and family status decided on the categorization of employees during peacetime, during the war this was influenced by forced labour. An analysis of the quality of housing, hygienic situation, supplying, food, and wage costs of MAS company employees in Sezimovo Ústí has shown that the working groups of Jews (being non sui juris) as forced labourers were exposed to the worst conditions. Regardless of their achieved education, acquired knowledge, or experience, the forces labourers had to carry out lower-ranking work.
