Description The aim of this paper is to present the role of the constructivist theories of learning in museums with focus on process of construction and presentation of a national identity, which takes place in museums. Thesis of contribution is based on the belief that the constructivist theories of learning are an important component of the modern museums, which explicitly acknowledge to theirs educational role. These theories, which application into space of museums introduces especially George Hein, does not have to be used only in the context of targeted museum educational activities, but are part of the museums themselves. In the process of construction of national identity they play a specific role, because they contribute to the mitigation of potential ideological pressures of museums, which highlight especially critical museum theories. Constructivist theories of learning show that the perception of national identity in museums is not only a complex issue, but also subjective event. Thanks to these theories we can realize that the construction of national identity in museums does not depend only under the influence intentions of the exhibition (its creators) but to this process are also involved visitor's specific characteristics, including his current knowledge, attitudes and experience. Along with this it also shows that the process of creating dialogue and multi-meaning exhibitions which the constructivist theories seek, in the context of national identity is not an easy task and creators of exhibitions are exposed to a number of problems. Part of the contribution will therefore be a brief presentation of the recent research findings of major word studies of national identity in museums. Also the draft of the forthcoming dissertation research which deals with the process of construction of national identity in the museum will be introduced.
